App comparison
Best Porn Blocker Apps in 2026: 4 Types of Blocking Compared
Porn blockers work in four different ways. We compare SEVER, BlockerX, Canopy, Covenant Eyes, QUITTR and free DNS filters by how they block, and where.
Porn blockers look alike in the app store, but they work in very different ways. How a blocker works decides where it works: which browsers, which apps, which devices. It also decides who can see what. Pick the wrong type and you’ll have a blocker that’s switched on and still leaves your usual door open. Here are the four types and the best app for each.
The four types of porn blocker
| Type | How it works | Strength | Weak spot |
|---|---|---|---|
| App and site blockers | An app on your device stops chosen apps and adult sites | Can block apps, not just websites | Usually tied to one device and its browsers |
| DNS filters | Your phone or router asks a filtering DNS service before loading any site | Free, covers every app and browser on that network or device | Can be switched off in settings |
| Accountability tools | Activity, or screenshots of it, is shared with someone you choose | Human involvement | Privacy trade-off; paid |
| Built-in OS controls | Screen Time on iPhone and similar system settings | Free and hard to remove with a passcode | Basic lists, limited control |

Disclosure: SEVER is our product. We built SEVER. Other tools are described from their official sites, support pages and store listings.
1. SEVER
- Best for
- Blocking plus the recovery tools around it
- Access
- Shields in Premium; streak, check-ins and relapse logs free
- Platforms
- iPhone, Android
SEVER is a quit-porn app first, so its blocker sits next to a streak, check-ins and Fight the Urge. On iPhone, App Shield uses Apple’s Screen Time to shield the apps and categories you pick, and Site Shield is a Safari content blocker with your own blocked and allowed sites. On Android, App Shield interrupts selected apps and Site Shield checks addresses in supported browsers against the on-device list. You can also follow a guided setup for Cloudflare’s family DNS as an extra layer.
Pausing Site Shield happens inside SEVER after a short reflection step, which adds a pause at exactly the moment it matters.
Strengths
- Site Shield blocks 200,000+ adult sites; App Shield blocks the apps you choose
- Checks happen on your device; no browsing history is saved or sent
- Pausing takes a short reflection step, not one tap
Trade-offs
- On iPhone, Site Shield filters Safari (use App Shield for other browsers)
- No desktop app
Available on: SEVER on the App Store · SEVER on Google Play
2. BlockerX
- Best for
- A dedicated blocker across many devices
- Access
- Free download; Premium (annual or lifetime) for full features; 1-day trial on its site
- Platforms
- iPhone, Android, Windows, macOS, Chrome extension
BlockerX is the most cross-platform option here: phone apps, desktop apps and a Chrome extension. Its official site describes adult-site blocking by URL and keyword, custom block lists, an allowlist-only mode, safe-search enforcement, and Premium features like an accountability partner and Android uninstall protection.
Strengths
- Custom block lists, an allowlist-only mode and safe search
- Panic switch, community and an accountability partner with daily reports
- Uninstall protection on Android, uninstall alerts on iOS
Trade-offs
- A subscription is required for all features
- Uses a VPN on iPhone
3. Canopy
- Best for
- Filtering every device in a household
- Access
- 7-day free trial, then an annual plan (from $8.33/month)
- Platforms
- iPhone, Android, Windows, macOS
Canopy’s adult plans combine porn filtering, app and website blocking, removal prevention and accountability across phones and computers. It’s a good fit if you need consistent filtering everywhere and want removal to be hard.
Strengths
- Porn filtering plus app and website blocking
- Removal prevention
- Accountability features
Trade-offs
- No permanent free plan
- Built for filtering, not recovery
4. Covenant Eyes
- Best for
- Accountability first, blocking second
- Access
- 7-day free trial, then $18/month, $198/year or $950 lifetime
- Platforms
- iPhone, Android, Windows, macOS
Covenant Eyes blocks explicit domains, but its core is Screen Accountability: screenshots are processed, blurred and surfaced to an ally when questionable. Choose it if being seen by someone you trust is what keeps you honest.
Strengths
- Screen Accountability with an ally
- Explicit-domain blocking
- Check-ins
Trade-offs
- Screenshot monitoring is a privacy trade-off
- Behaviour differs on iOS
5. QUITTR
- Best for
- A recovery program with blocking built in
- Access
- Paid: monthly, yearly or lifetime
- Platforms
- iPhone, Android, Chrome extension
QUITTR is mainly a recovery program, with blocking built in. Its App Store listing describes “advanced filtering technology” and AI-powered temptation blockers, and its Google Play listing describes filtering and blocking of selected apps and sites through an accessibility service. Its website also links a Chrome extension.
Strengths
- Filtering and blockers on iPhone and Android
- Program, streaks and community
- Very large iPhone user base
Trade-offs
- iOS blocking method not detailed publicly
- No free plan
6. Cloudflare family DNS (free)
- Best for
- Free filtering for every app on a device or network
- Access
- Free
- Platforms
- Android (Private DNS), routers, computers
Cloudflare’s family resolver (1.1.1.3 and 1.0.0.3, or family.cloudflare-dns.com for Android Private DNS) filters malware and adult content before a site even loads. Set it on your phone or on your home router to cover every device at once. It’s the best free layer to put under any app above.
Strengths
- Filters malware and adult content at the DNS level
- Covers every browser and app on that connection
- Free from Cloudflare
Trade-offs
- Can be switched off in settings
- Domain-level only; no app blocking
Layering: the setup that works best
No single blocker covers everything. A practical setup layers two types:
- A DNS filter underneath. Cloudflare family DNS on your phone or router covers every app and browser.
- An app and site blocker on top. SEVER, BlockerX or Canopy for the specific apps and sites you relapse through.
- Lock the settings. A Screen Time passcode or uninstall protection, held by someone else if possible.
- Track what gets through. Relapse logs show which door is still open.
How to choose
- Your relapses start on your phone: SEVER or BlockerX.
- You need laptops covered too: BlockerX, Canopy or Covenant Eyes.
- You want another person involved: Covenant Eyes or Canopy.
- You want to spend $0: Cloudflare family DNS plus built-in controls. See our free porn blocker guide.
Platform-specific setups are in our iPhone porn blocker guide and Android porn blocker guide.
Methodology
We used official websites, support pages and store listings: all checked in October 2026. SEVER details come from the current app. We don’t repeat any vendor’s claim of perfect or universal blocking, because no blocker can promise that.
Frequently asked questions
What is the most effective porn blocker?
The one that covers the door you actually use. A Safari blocker does nothing if you relapse in another browser; a phone blocker does nothing on a laptop. Layering two types, such as an app blocker plus DNS filtering, closes more doors than any single app.
Can porn blockers be bypassed?
Yes. No blocker is impossible to bypass. Blockers work by adding friction at the moment of impulse, which is often enough. Protect settings with a passcode someone else holds to make bypassing harder.
Do porn blockers slow down my phone?
DNS filters and content blockers check addresses against a list and are usually unnoticeable. On-device app blockers run in the background but only act when a blocked app or site opens.
Is there a porn blocker that doesn't track my browsing?
Yes. SEVER checks sites on your device and does not save or send your browsing history. DNS filters see the domains you look up. Accountability tools like Covenant Eyes intentionally share flagged activity with an ally.
